When using a lateral elliptical, research shows a 27% increase in caloric expenditure going from lateral width 1 to lateral width 10, and a 30% increase in outer and inner thigh work over traditional ellipticals. For additional variety, a stepping motion can be used and alternated with lateral movements for recovery or to incorporate beneficial cross training. Exercisers are free to customize their motion and target different muscle groups at any time throughout workouts.

I love it. Big guy- 5'11' 230lb. As an old hockey player, it reminds me of a skating motion. I use MMA mode every time. You can adjust the lateral to feel almost like a std elliptical with the narrowest setting or feel like I'm playing hockey or skate style cross country skiing depending on how you adjust. Huge range of adjustability. My wife is not sold on it and strongly prefers her old Q45e Octane std unit. She thinks the Lateral gives her low back issues, but she does have back trouble in general just to be fair to the machine. I feel like it makes my back stronger and don't have an issue. I'm not sure if the quality is the same nowadays, but my wife has used her Q45e nearly every day for 15 years. Yes, we have had a few minor repairs and they haven't been cheap when needed- probably $1200 over the years. We've the Q45e is finally ready to be replaced after about a million miles. The quality of Octane is what drew us in to the brand and keeps us loyal. I hope the buyout and new ownership doesn't wreck that part and am concerned about that issue.
